Foods you can use in place of breadcrumbs in your recipes

By Chioma Leave a Comment

Breadcrumb is one of the essential ingredients that you should have in your kitchen. You can read up how to make your own breadcrumbs rather than getting the store-bought ones which may have additional artificial ingredients and preservatives. Cooking with breadcrumbs will feature often in Mummy’s Yum, so watch out for recipes or better still, get them saved in your e-mail for future reference by adding your email address to the mailing list.

Breadcrumb substitutes are those alternatives that you can use in place of breadcrumbs and still get that tasty, crunchy effect you want. These alternatives can be used where you have run out breadcrumbs; or you want to be versatile in your cooking; or you want to create a different taste to one of your favourite meals. Cooking is not ‘straight-jacketed’ and if a recipe calls for a particular ingredient, you can think of a substitute as done in this case (more food substitutes will be researched and shared with you from time to time).

CrackersCrackers – Put in a blender and whizz to your desired texture. If you are using a salty variety, remember to adjust whatever you are cooking it with in order, to avoid a salty meal.

CornflakesCornflakes – Same as crackers, just blend or you can put in a transparent or nylon bag and crush with your rolling pin. Make some crunchy fried chicken with cornflakes coating.

CheeriosCheerios – Blend too or crush with rolling pin. Remember it is sweeter than cornflakes and may add that sweet crunchiness to your food. So, be sure that’s the flavour you want.

OatsOats – This is more suitable for binding and adding bulk to your food. Just grind to a soft smooth texture.

Cornmeal – This can add more crunch when you use it to coat your food  like the crispy yam bites.

Also remember that you can add a kick or flavour to your breadcrumbs  or the substitutes with seasonings and herbs. Some suya spice, rosemary or thyme, shredded scent and curry leaves, cinnamon powder, salt and pepper will make your finished outcome more tasty. Now, get creative and add variety  to your meals with your crumbs and seasonings.

Do you know other alternatives to breadcrumb? Please share with us in the comment box so that we can all learn.
